Just imagine this you have an old Mac machine and plan to sell it or donate it so that you can get a new one. But you have so many private files stored on the Macintosh hard drive, you can't take the risk if the guy who get your computer is good at Mac data recovery. Then how to permanently erase Mac hard drive and wipe a Mac out clean on an easy go?
Normally you can rely on the Mac recovery CD to get the job done. You must reboot your computer using the OS X system CD that came with your Macintosh. Insert the CD into the CD drive. Hold down the C key during the startup process. Select your preferred language. You will then see the Welcome to the Mac OS X Installer window. From the Installer Menu Bar, click Open Disk Utility. You will then see the Disk Utility window. In the left pane of the Disk Utility window, click the drive you want to erase. In the right pane of the Disk Utility window, click the Erase tab. From the Volume Format drop-down menu, select Mac OS Extended (Journaled). In the Name field, highlight the existing text and type the name the hard drive is to be called after it's formatted.
However the normal way can take up to hours to complete. If you want to make it quick, you can rely on a Mac shredder program to finish the task. With advanced wiping algorithms such as Zeros, DoD 5220.22-M, German Standard, Russian Standard etc, there will never be a chance for your personal and important data being left around. This reduces the chances of identity theft on your Mac.
Remember - make sure you have made a copy of those valuable files & data before you begin to wipe Mac hard drive, because the erase option will get rid of all files from Mac drive for good!
